Select Stream Pretreatment of Soft Drink Process Wastewater

Background-

A soft drink bottling company in the Southeast US was experiencing excessive wastewater surcharges associated with the process wastewater discharge from the plant. To reduce surcharge cost to acceptable levels, the company decided to install a select stream pretreatment system.

Project Description-

The select stream system consists of a high/low strength segregation system installed for each fill line. The system pumps high strength process wastewater to holding tanks and allows low strength process wastewater to discharge to the plant sewer. Wastewater from the can/bottle crusher and pre/post mix operations are also pumped to the holding tanks. From the high strength holding tanks, the process wastewater is fed to an anaerobic reactor for BOD reduction. Effluent from the anaerobic is combined with the low strength stream prior to dishcharge to the municipal sewer for final treatment. Biogas generated during the treatment process is collected and flared. BOD levels in the plant discharges prior to the pretreatment system have ranged from 800-2,000 mg/L. With the pretreatment system, these levels are expected to range from 300-500 mg/L.

The project includes two(2) in-floor high/low strength segregation systems, two(2) 10,000 gallon holding tanks, holding tank recirculation/transfer system, anaerobic reactor, biogas collection and flare system, and chemical feed systems.

A 9 ft. by 14 ft. masonry building to house pumps, control system and electrical systems was also constructed. The pretreatment system is controlled by PLC with a remote operator interface. Operating staff can monitor the high/low strength segregation system and pretreatment system and make control changes to the systems from the QC lab. The pretreatment system is capable of treating up to 5,000 gallons-per-day of process wastewater with an influent organic load of 35,000 mg/L-COD. The system is designed to achieve a minimum 70% reduction of organic load for the high strength stream.

Project Scope-

MRV was retained to provide design, project/construction management, procurement, installation, start-up and operator training for the pretreatment system and project/construction management, procurement, installation and start-up for the high/low segregation system.
